How to play The Song Game

Everyone answers a question with a song, plays it, and talks about why they chose it. Here's everything else you need to know.

Setting up

  1. Open the game on one phone. It's free and runs in your browser.
  2. Choose a deck: The Original for grown-ups, or Family for playing with kids.
  3. Choose how long to play: 8-track (8 songs, about 40 min), Mixtape (16 songs, about an hour and a half), CD (24 songs, about two hours), Jukebox (no limit, play until you stop).
  4. Add everyone's names. 2 to 10 people can play.

Each round

  1. The game draws a question. Take turns choosing the category, or leave it to chance.
  2. Pass the phone. On your turn, search for a song that answers the question for you.
  3. Play it out loud, on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or whatever you use.
  4. Tell everyone why you picked it. Everyone's free to ask about the story behind it.
  5. When everyone's had a turn, the next question comes up.

The rules

  1. Select a song to share with the group based on the question
  2. No repeating a song
  3. The person who selected the song controls whether it can be skipped or not
  4. Everyone is free to ask questions about the story behind the choice of song
  5. Two filler songs a game, for when you can't think of one that fits

When you're stuck

Give me a moment: still thinking? The next person goes and you go later in the round. Up to 2 times a game.

Filler: for when your song doesn't fit the question. Up to 2 times a game.

Add a question: write your own. It comes up in a later round, with your name on it. Once a game.

At the end

You get a recap of every song, who picked it and the question it answered. Share it on WhatsApp or play the whole lot again on YouTube.
