A music game for road trips

The Song Game was made for long drives. Someone reads out a question, like "a song that fits a late night drive", everyone picks a song that answers it, and you play them through the car and talk about why you chose them.

How it works in the car

Open the game on one phone and plug it into the car, or connect it over Bluetooth. Add everyone's names, choose how long you want to play, and the game draws the first question.

The phone goes round the passengers. On your turn, search for your song, play it, and tell everyone the story behind it. Whoever picked the song decides whether it can be skipped.

The driver can play too: they say their song out loud and a passenger searches for it. Nobody needs to touch a phone while driving.

Questions that work on the road

A few from the game's Original deck:

  • A song that is a road trip essential
  • A song that fits a late night drive
  • A song that you'd listen to during sunset
  • A song that you know all the lyrics to
  • A song that reminds you of your favourite holiday
  • A song that reminds you of home
  • A song with a place name in the title
  • A song that makes you want to dance no matter what

Choose a game to fit the drive

Pick a length at the start: 8-track (8 songs, about 40 min), Mixtape (16 songs, about an hour and a half) or CD (24 songs, about two hours). For a really long drive there's Jukebox, which keeps going until you stop.

Each song gets played all the way through unless its owner says otherwise, so a game takes about as long as the music does.

Arrive with a playlist

At the end, the game shows every song from the trip with who picked it and the question it answered. Share it to the group chat, or play it all again on the way home.

Questions people ask

Do we need Spotify in the car?
No. Search for any song in the game, then play it on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or whatever you've got. Each person can use their own.
Does it work without signal?
The game needs a connection to search for songs, and so does streaming them. On a drive through the hills, pick a few songs ahead of time or use downloaded music.
Can everyone in the car play?
Yes, from 2 to 10 people, so a full car or a convoy's worth of friends. Only one phone is needed.
